3 FIELD SAMPLING PROCEDURES
The following sections provide the field procedures to be utilized during collection of soil
samples from hand auger/direct-push and hollow-stem auger borings, and collection of
groundwater samples from monitoring wells. Example field forms including boring logs,
well development forms, and FSDSs are provided in Appendix A.
3.1 Soil Sampling
As discussed above, up to three soil samples will be collected from each hand
auger/direct-push boring and seven of the sixteen hollow-stem auger borings. Field
procedures to be utilized during soil sample field screening, soil sample extraction, and
soil and groundwater sample labeling are provided below.
3.1.1 Soil Sample Field Screening
Soil samples will be collected from all 45 hand auger/direct-push borings and seven of
the sixteen hollow-stem auger borings at approximate depths of 2.5 and 5 feet bgs. The
samples will be collected at each depth using a hand auger sampler lined with a 6-inch
acrylic liner. Upon retrieval of each soil sample, approximately 1 inch of the soil from
each 6-inch liner will be placed in a re-sealable plastic bag, and labeled with the
corresponding sample number for field screening purposes. Following removal of the
material for field screening the acrylic liner will be immediately capped and placed in an
iced cooler.
Soil samples will be collected continuously from 5 feet bgs to 10 feet bgs in all 45 soil
borings utilizing direct-push drilling techniques with acrylic liners installed within the
direct-push boring rods. Upon retrieval from the boring, the acrylic liners will be cut into
two-foot sections. Approximately four inches of each section will be further cut, and the
material from the 4-inch section will be placed in a resealable plastic bag and labeled with
the corresponding sample number. The remaining 20 inches of each acrylic liner will be
immediately capped and placed in an iced cooler.
Soil samples will be collected continuously from 5 feet bgs to 10 feet bgs in seven of the
sixteen hollow-stem auger borings. The samples will be collected using decontaminated
2-inch diameter split tube samplers lined with 6-inch acrylic liners. Upon retrieval of
Sampling and Analysis Plan-Final 5/18/2012
3-1
