San Joaquin County EHD
December 7, 2005
Organic Compounds (SVOCs) using EPA Method 8270 and total recoverable petroleum
hydrocarbons (TRPH)by EPA Method 418.1.
No petroleum hydrocarbon constituents, including VOCs, were detected above the method
detection limits in the soil samples collected from beneath the septic tank (T1-7), the distribution
box (D 1-6.5), the two leach pits (P 1-3 and P2-4), and the one of the leach line samples (LL 1-3).
Sample LL2-3, collected from beneath the eastern most leach line, contained TRPH at 50 parts
per million (ppm) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) at 0.37 ppm. Analytical results are
summarized in Table 2.
Disposal of Liquid Waste and Sampling of Desiccated Sludge
Pursuant to a March 9, 2005 work plan, the property owner transported the 1,200-gallon temporary
storage tank to a separate property at 443 Ladd Road, Modesto, California, where the liquid was
evaporated and the sludge spread out to dry on plastic sheeting. As stated previously, analytical
results of the liquid waste indicated that the waste was not considered a hazardous material.
H ._ buhy e`TP0
Pt
After the sludge was sufficiently dried, it was placed into three 5-gallon pails, sealed, and
transported by a representative of Berberian to Ground Zero's office in Escalon. Ground Zero
promptly returned the containerized desiccated sludge to the Miller Avenue site.
A three to one (3:1) composite sample was collected from the dried sludge on August 18, 2005.
The samples were collected into 1—'/2 inch diameter brass tubes and sealed with teflon tape and
plastic end caps. The samples were transported in a cooled ice chest under chain of custody
protocol to Argon Laboratories (ELAP #2359) for analysis. The dried sludge samples were
analyzed for TPHg,TPHd, TRPH,VOCs including acetone,and SVOCs.
The desiccated sludge sample contained TPHd at a concentration of 27,000 ppm, TRPH at 58,000
ppm, acetone at 73 ppm, and DEHP at 56 ppm. Analytical results are summarized in Table 2. A
copy of the laboratory report is included as Attachment 2.
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS
Acetone: Acetone was detected in the original wastewater sample as well as the dried sludge
sample, but at levels below recommended cleanup goals.
DEHP: DEHP was detected at low levels in one of the soil samples collected beneath a
leach line removed from the septic system as well as in the dried sludge sample. DEHP is a
common plasticizer found in pipes, hoses, and other plastic material.
G:\GROUNDZE\Berbetian\sum—closure.doc
