PRIMA Environmental tmoise/2
August 25,2004
b.
SCOPE OF WORK
Task 1 Ozone Demand
The ozone demand of soil will be estimated using a method based on the"Ozone
Demand"test described in Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and
Wastewater, 19`h Ed.
` A small amount of soil will be added to ozone-saturated water, then the concentration of
ozone will be measured oover time using the indigo method. A control in which no soil
is added will also be performed. Each test will be conducted in duplicate and one to two
soil amounts will be used. The soil ozone demand (SODoz) is taken to be the difference
in ozone consumption in the presence and absence of site material. It was calculated
according to the equation
SODoz = {[03 Consumed]soil—[03 Consumed]o„trol] x V/M Eqn. 2
where
SOD = soil oxidant demand in mg 03 consumed/g soil
[03 Consumed]eornol =change in 03 concentration in the absence of soil in mg/L
[03 Consumed]soil =change in 03 concentration in the presence of soil in mg/L
V=volume of ozonated water in L
M= mass of soil in g
Task 2. Confirmation of Contaminant Removal
A preliminary test will be conducted in which a mixture of site soil and groundwater
containing H2O2 will be sparged with ozone to estimate the longevity of the H2O2. The
presence of H2O2will be monitored using test strips.
To confirm that COCs are removed and estimate the amount of removal due to
destruction versus volatilization, three batch tests will be conducted. Soil and GW will
be placed in a closed reactor fitted with a gas dispersion tube and vent for off-gases. One
reactor will also include an inlet for addition of H2O2. Ozone will be sparged into two of
the reactors, including the one to which H2O2is added. The third reactor will be sparged
with nitrogen. Off-gases will be collected in Tedlar bags for 60 minutes in order to
determine whether volatilization is occurring. (Gases will be collected from 0-30
minutes and from 30-60 minutes. Note that it is not possible to collect all of the off-gases
due to the large volume expected.) The off-gases will then be analyzed for CDCs. At the
end of the test, the aqueous phases will be analyzed for COCs. Untreated soil and water
` will also be analyzed.
Total number of analyses, Task 2:
• CDCs in water:
o 4 std TAT
L
PRIMA Environmental 2 General Ozone Protocols
February 2,2004 Applied Process Technology, Inc.
I✓
