. 3 0 SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples will be collected in 2.5 inch-diameter brass rings contained in an 18 inch-long
Califorma-modified spit-spoon drive sampler advanced below the lead auger by repeated blows
of a 140 pound drop hammer. Samples will be collected at 5 foot depth intervals for the twenty-
foot borings and 2 5 foot depth mtervals for the 10 foot borings (or at the direction of the field
geologist/engineer) for logging and initial screening. Logging will include visual, tactile, and
olfactory observations of soil physical characteristics and will be recorded according to the
Unified Sod Classification System and other appropriate descriptors
Appropriate decontamination procedures will be followed for all soil collection and handling
activities to assure sample representativeness and avoid sample contamination and formation
cross-contamunation. Specifically, all drill augers and drive sampler components will be cleaned
by high-pressure steam cleaner prior to contacting the formation
All soil samples will be screened by ambient temperature headspace methods for indications of
hydrocarbon contamination and results of the headspace readings will be recorded. This method
involves placing approximately 5 cubic inches of soil into a sealed polyethylene bag and allowing
the soil temperature to equilibrate for approximately 15 minutes At that time, the probe of a
portable organic vapor meter (OVM) or photo-ionization detector (PID), calibrated with
isobutylene, will be inserted into the bag headspace and the reading will be recorded. Samples
of material corresponding to the highest three (3) vapor readings from each test boring will be
. selected for laboratory analysis.
Selected soil samples will be sealed with Teflon sheets, capped, labelled, and transferred under
chain-of-custody to a state-certified laboratory
4.0 LABORATORY ANALYSES
All chemical analyses of selected soil samples will be performed by a California-certified
laboratory. Laboratory analysis to be conducted will consist of the following U S. EPA
approved methods:
- Total Extractable Hydrocarbons (TEH) utilizing DOHS LUFT Method (gasoline,
kerosene, and diesel),
Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and total Xylenes utilizing EPA Method 8020 (BTEX);
and
Organic lead utilizing DOHS LUFT Method
It is estimated that three samples per boring will be submitted for laboratory analysis
Remaining soil samples will be archived for a period of thirty (30) days for future analysis if
necessary
K064W4 PW 2
