Mr. Eric J. Holm
March 26, 1997
Page 5
Based on activities conducted at the building, soil and soil gas samples at
10 and/or 20 feet bgs should be collected in the following areas:
(a) The area adjacent to and beneath the building, the aboveground
tanks located outside of the building, and the Banbury mixing
stations (mixers); and
(b) The area along the sewer lines and adjacent to the building's floor
drains.
(7) Building No. 7. The labor intensive products which Holz manufactures
are assembled in this building (Handbuild Department).
Soil gas samples at 10 and/or 20 feet bgs should be collected beneath the
building and in the area adjacent the hydrotest to determine if on-site
operations have caused any VOCs contaminations, and the extent of
contamination migrated from upgradient locations.
(8) Buildings No. 8 and 9. Building No. 8 is a warehouse which stores the
finished products, and Building No. 9 is the Expansion Joint Department
assembling pressure piping networks and fuel ducting systems. The spray
booth, the autoclave areas, and the shot blast furnace are located near the
rear portion of Buildings No. 8 and 9. The spray booth is used to apply
adhesives to rubber components. The two autoclaves are used to adhere
rubber to metal; and the shot blast furnace is used to vulcanize rubber.
The solvents; i.e., MIK, MEK, PCE, toluene mixed in Building 1 are used
here in the spray booth. A WE value up to 404 ug/I was found in the
groundwater sample collected downgradient from these two buildings.
Because the highest levels of TCE and metals were detected in the
groundwater downgradient from these two buildings, depth-discrete soil
and soil gas samples at 10, 20, and/or 30 feet bgs need to be collected at
the following locations to determine if soils are contaminated with metals,
VOCs, semi-VOCs,phenolic compounds, and TPH and extent of the
contamination:
(a) The area adjacent to and beneath the spray booth, autoclave area,
and the shot blast furnace; and
