Supplemental Investigation Report,Problem Assessment Report and Work Plan
Cleanu and Abatement Order No 5-00-707 EAI Pro ect No 1232
6 3 2 Ground Water Remediation
_P and Treat
Pumping ground water follow by aboveground treatment has been proved to be an inefficient
and expensive remediation method However, in some cases this technology can be efficient to
contain contamination from further migrating However, since the RIW has been shutdown,
containment is no Ionger an issue Therefore, pump and treat is not recommended for further
evaluation at this time
Vapor Extraction
Vapor extraction has proved to be efficient for remediation of soil which possesses sufficient
air permeability However, vapor extraction alone has not been efficient in remediation of
impacted ground water Therefore, vapor extraction alone is not recommended for the further
evaluation at this time
Air S ar in a or Extraction
Air sparging is a technology which introduces air into the ground water thereby agitating it and
causing dissolved VOCs to evaporate in the air stream, resulting in VOCs being stripped from
the ground water Additionally, air-sparging results in enhanced biodegradation of dissolved
VOCs due to increasing the concentration of dissolved oxygen in ground water Sparging air
enriched with VOCs is collected aboveground (extracted) and treated prior to being discharged
to the atmosphere Air sparging coupled with vapor extraction has been implemented at the
Wards site and is proving to be efficient in remediating the site The method is considered by
EPA as a presumptive remedy and recommended for further evaluation This remedial measure
is currently being used at the Wards site
Blospaarg(n_
Biosparging is a technology similar to air sparging only with a low sparging airflow, therefore
no extraction and consequently ex-situ treatment of the sparging air is required The
technology is aimed to enhance aerobic biodegradation of dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons
This alternative is recommended for evaluation
BioslurpingZPual Phase Extraction
This alternative is designed to increase the ground water extraction rate by applying negative
pressure to an extraction well and at the same time to subject the soil in vadose and capillary
fringe zones and cone of depression to the negative pressure which should promote
volatilization and removal of petroleum constituents This alternative is not recommended for
consideration for the same reason as a pump and treat alternative
BS 1232P i1LW_WP -2 1-
ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT, INC
