Between mid-August 1985 and March 1988 , at least 19 soil borings, 9 monitoring wells, 5 recovery wells, and 7 extraction wells were installed by Kleinfelder and Associates. These soil borings and wells initially delineated the zone of soil contamination. Since soil boring data are included in our ' previously submitted work plans, this information will not be repeated herein. The extent of ground water contamination, however, has not yet been completely defined. 1 On January 19 , 1988, and again on July 26, 1988, Kaprealian Engineering, Inc. (KEI) submitted proposals for soil and ground water remediation at the site. A proposal was subsequently 1 approved by Unocal and the pertinent regulatory agencies. soil remediation began on September 19 , 1988 . FIELD ACTIVITIES KEI's field work pertaining to soil remediation began on September 19 , 1988 and was completed on December 12 , 1988 . The area excavated in relationship to the Kleinfelder and Associates soil borings is as indicated on the Site Plan, Figure 1, attached. A total of 28 soil samples were collected and analyzed from the excavation sidewalls and bottom. These samples were used to further delineate the zone of contamination and guide soil excavation. The excavation was terminated at ground water ' (a depth of 53 feet) unless pit bottom samples indicated non- detectable concentrations of the contaminants sought. Two pit bottom samples were taken for each 400 square feet of surface area . one sidewall sample was taken for each 20 linear feet of ' excavation perimeter. The pit samples were collected from bulk material excavated by backhoe. The samples were placed in clean, 2" diameter brass tubes , sealed with aluminum foil, plastic caps and tape, and stored in a cooled ice chest for delivery to a certified laboratory. Sample locations are as shown on the attached Site Plans (Figures 2 through 16) . Pertinent final 1 excavation samples and their locations are as indicated on the Site Plan, Figure 2 attached. From September 30 through December 12 , 1988 , 103 composite soil 1 samples, labeled Al through A4 , B1 through B4 , C1 through C4 , D1 through D3 , El through E4 , X, Y, 1 through 38 , RI through R42 , R25A and R26A, were collected from a total of approximately 6, 000 cubic yards of soil excavated from the pit. Each composite consisted of four individual grab samples taken at various locations and depths ranging from one to two feet and composited as one sample by the lab. These samples were also handled and - stored as described above._ The location of composite stockpile samples are also shown on the Site Plans (Figures 3 through 16) . 1 i 1
