Mr. Don O. Culbertson Proposal P95-060.56
June 29, 1995
Page 2
8270 and for metals. Only two constituents (2-Methylnaphthalene and Phenanthrene)
were detected in the soil sample analyzed by method 8270. According to the Raney
report, detected metal concentrations were within normal background concentrations.
Soils samples submitted for EPA method 8015m ranged between nondetect in several of
the samples to 330 milligrams/kilogram (mg/kg) in the sample designated S24 collected
from Area 7. The results of the soil sampling program conducted by Raney are
summarized in Tables 1 and 2.
Follow-up work was performed on May 22, 1995 in areas where the results of soil
sampling indicated that initial excavations had not removed the bulk of impacted soils
(Figure 3). This work was performed to remove additional impacted soils in these areas
and to collect additional soil samples. With the exception of Areas 2 and 4, soil samples
collected from the bottom and sidewalls of the excavations completed during this round
of sampling contained no detectable concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons as
identified by EPA method 8015m.
On May 24 1995, additional soil was removed from Areas 2 and 4 (Figure 4). Area 2
was excavated to a depth of 12 feet, and a soil sample was collected from the bottom of
excavation. Area 4 was excavated to the limit of the backhoe's capability at
approximately 24 feet below grade (bg), and soil samples were collected from the
sidewalls and the bottom of the excavation for chemical analysis. Groundwater was
encountered in this excavation at a depth of approximately 24 feet. The results of the soil
analyses indicated a concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons of 1 mg/kg in the sample
collected from Area 2 at 12 feet bg. The results of chemical analysis of the soil sample
collected from Area 4 at 24 feet bg indicated significant concentrations of petroleum
hydrocarbons (6,150 mg/kg, C,-C32).
SCOPE OF WORK
EMCON's approach to this project is divided into five tasks which are described in this
section.
Task 1 Pre-field Activities
Before field activities begin, EMCON will arrange for the field equipment needed for the
soil and shallow groundwater sampling program. EMCON will contact Underground
Services Alert and contract an underground utilities locating service to clear sampling
locations. Appropriate permits will be obtained before initiating any field work. If CPL
encounters significant difficulty gaining access to locations northeast of the site, EMCON
FRE/H\wp\proposaTP9506056.wp5-95 gtf:l
