Site Background Information: Chapin Brothers Investments, Inc.
IAS/SVE REMEDIATION CONFIRMATION ASSESSMENT - 1999
On 24 and 25 May 1999 and 20 July 1999, five soil probe borings (CBI through CB5) and ten
`hydro-punch`borings(CHP 1 through CHP9,and CHPSC)were advanced at the site.Probe borings
for soil confirmation were advanced in the area of the former USTs and on a vacant lot 200 feet
southwest of the former UST area. Confirmation soil boring were advanced near previous borings
to compare analytical results with previously obtained from soil boring samples. Probe boring CB 1
was advanced to a depth of 40 feet bsg near MW-1, soil probe boring CB2(near VW-7 and MW-4)
was advanced to a depth of 35 feet bsg;boring CB3 (near MW-5 and B7)was advanced to a depth
of 30 feet bsg; confirmation soil boring CB4 (near MW-3)was advanced to a depth of 20 feet bsg
and confirmation soil boring CB5(near VE-1)was advanced to a depth of 35 feet bsg.Confirmation
`hydro-punch` borings were advanced to 20 feet bsg, at the vadose zone/ground water interface,
allowing for grab water sampling. Locations of the soil probe borings are illustrated on Figure 2.
SOIL AND GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
Soil probe boring CB3, CHP1 through CHP9, including CHPSC were sampled for ground water.
Hydro-punch samples CB3, CHP 1 through CHP5 were collected on 24 May 1999; hydro-punch
samples CB6 and CB7 were collected on 25 May 1999 and hydro-punch samples CB8, CB9 and
CBSC were collected on 20 July 1999.
Selected soil and ground water samples were analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g),
• Volatile aromatic hydrocarbons(benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylene: BTEX)
and methyl butyl ether(MTBE)and
• Oxygenated fuel additives: methyl butyl ether (MTBE), tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA), di-
isopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE) and tertiary amyl methyl ether
(TAME).
HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SOIL
Seventeen soil samples were analyzed for TPH-g, BTEX, and fuel additives including MTBE.
• TPH-g was detected in seven of the seventeen soil samples analyzed. TPH-g was detected
at concentrations as great as 880 milligram pre kilogram(mg/kg)in soil sample CB5-15'.
• TPH-g was detected in soil above 25 feet bsg near the northen end of the building on the site
at concentrations up to 531 mg/kg(CB5-30').TPH-g was detected in a soil boring at depths
below 25 feet bsg at a maximum concentration of 350 mg/kg.
Advanced GcoEnvironmental,Inc.
