I20 July 1995
• AGE-NC-95-0113
' 3.0. PROCEDURES
3 1 DRILLING AND SAMPLING
' On 16, 17 and 19 May 1995 five sod borings were drilled at the site Two borings (B 1 and 132) were
drilled at an angle of 25* from vertical Each boring was drilled using a truck-mounted HT-55 drill
Irig equipped with hollow-stem augers The drill ng and two-man crew were supplied by Soils
Exploration Service, Inc (SES) of Benicia, California Boring MW-1 was advanced to a depth of
40 feet, boring B3 was advanced to a depth of 15 feet, boring B-4 was advanced to a depth of 20
' feet Borings B 1 and B2 were advanced to vertical depths of 15 feet, requiring approximately 20 feet
of auger
' Soil samples were collected ahead of the drill bit using a split-tube sampler loaded with three pre-
cleaned 2-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves Samples were collected at five-foot intervals, using a 140-
pound hammer to advance the sampler 18 inches The number of blows required to advance the
samples in 6-inch increments was recorded on the boring logs To avoid cross-contamination, the
sampling equipment was washed in an alconox solution and rinsed twice with water prior to each
sample run The augers were steam-cleaned between borings
For each sample, troth ends of the lead sleeve were covered with aluminum or Teflon sheets, capped
and sealed with tape The samples were stored on ice and transported under chain-of-custody to
McCampbell Analytical Inc (MAI) in Pacheco, California Selected soil samples were analyzed for
total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g), volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene,
rethyl benzene and xylenes BTE&X) and total lead in accordance with EPA methods 5030/8015m,
8020 and 6010, respectively Based on the analytical results for total lead in the soil sample from B 1-
10, it was also analyzed for soluble lead in accordance with California Title 22 method
During drilling, auger, returns and soil sample duplicates were monitored for the presence of organic
vapors using a photo-ionization detector (PID Thermo Environmental 580A, 10 OeV, calibrated
using Isobutylene)
3 2 LOGGING
Soil was extruded from the second brass sleeve and screened for the presence of organic vapors,
using a PID, and the readings were recorded on the boring logs The soil was then described in
accordance with the United Soil Classification System Boring logs are included in Appendix A
I
