A copy of the Vehicle Spill Procedures Checklist is
included in all Spill Response Booklets. Find a copy
of the Spill Response Booklet at your location and
make sure a copy of this checklist is included.
The information on the Checklist should be reviewed
with employees at hire and then again at least once
per year.
Important Note: Ryder policy requires that all waste
materials be handled by waste vendors approved by
Ryder Environmental Services. Be sure to arrange for
proper disposal of all wastes and spill clean-up materials
generated during the clean-up. This includes soils,
pads, booms, wastewater, or snowmelt that have come
in contact with the spilled materials. Do not allow any
spill clean-up materials to be disposed of in a landfill.
When a vehicle spill occurs involving a Ryder -owned
vehicle, you must determine who holds the liability
insurance on the vehicle. The party holding the liability
insurance is primarily responsible for managing the
clean-up and making all regulatory notifications.
BUT, regardless of the insurance, the vehicle owner
and the vehicle operator both share responsibility
for the spill clean-up.
Sometimes it is not possible to determine whose
insurance covers the vehicle before response actions
must be taken. Take immediate action to protect
personal safety and the environment by using
resources available to stop the spill from spreading.
Ryder Vehicle Spill Kits, located in the vehicle, are
equipped with booms, pads, plugs, and putty to
assist in stopping a spill from spreading. Use the
plugs and putty to temporarily patch a ruptured fuel
tank or cross-over line. Apply the pads to the
ground to absorb liquids prior to spreading. Use the
booms to berm -off drains and waterways so that
liquids spilled from the truck will be diverted
AWAY FROM waterways, gullies, or storm drains.
Facility and Vehicle Spill Kits are available from
Breg International. Contact Breg for additional
information and spill response supplies.
Vehicle Spill Kits are equipped with bonding putty
that can be applied to a ruptured or leaking fuel tank.
3B putty jars are date-stamped but the shelf life is
indefinite PROVIDED THAT the jar is properly
sealed after it is opened. A proper seal can be created
by placing clean lubricant, cream, or grease around
the top of the jar prior to closing the lid. The lid
should then be closed securely. The putty should be
inspected every 6 months to ensure it has not dried
out. If the putty does dry out, water can be added to
make the putty pliable. If you need to replace the
putty, the cost is $7.00 per jar. Refer to contact and
ordering information above. These instructions have
been placed in all Vehicle Spill Kits that contain 3B
putty. Please review and follow these guidelines to
avoid costly mistakes.
It is estimated that by using a Vehicle Spill Kit to con-
trol and contain a vehicle fuel spill, you can reduce
clean-up costs associated with spill remediation by
more than 60%. So, that means instead of paying
$10,000 - $12,000 for spill clean-up costs, you can
reduce your costs to less than $4,000.
Facility Spill Procedures
A copy of the Facility Spill Procedures Checklist is
included in all Spill Response Booklets. Make sure a
copy of this Checklist is included in your facility's
Spill Response Booklet. Periodically call the emer-
gency numbers and confirm they are still working and
accurate.
