3 TELIC ENGINEERING CORPORATION (TEC) STANDARD OPERATING <br />PROCEDURE (SOP) # 89-005 <br />GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR UNDERGROUND TANK REMOVAL <br />I. UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK REMOVALS <br />The following procedures should be used prior to the removal <br />of any underground tank that previously stored a flammable or <br />combustible liquid. In addition, the procedures outlined <br />below must be followed to ensure that the entire preparation <br />and removal operation is conducted in a safe manner and the <br />possibility of an explosive incident is minimized. <br />A. Plan Review/Schedule of Removal <br />The following sequence is required to ensure prompt and <br />successful removal inspections: <br />* Upon receipt of the approved plans from <br />Environmental Health, forward one set to the Local <br />Fire Department, and one set to the local building <br />department. <br />* At least 2 working days prior to the removal of <br />underground storage tank(s), contact the local Fire <br />Prevention Field Department and Health Department. <br />B. Removal/On-site Procedures <br />* Telic Engineering Corporation shall ensure that all <br />flammable liquids/materials have been removed from <br />the tank(s) by means of an approved vacuum truck <br />prior to excavation. <br />* Under no circumstances shall welding equipment, <br />torches or any device capable of acting as an <br />ignition source be located within 50 feet of the <br />tank to be inerted. <br />* Underground tanks that previously contained Class <br />I or II flammable liquid shall be inerted prior to <br />excavation. <br />* The top of the tank shall be exposed to provide <br />access to all of the tank openings. <br />* Any piping containing product shall be carefully <br />disconnected and the contents shall be disposed of <br />in an approved manner. All products shall be properly <br />disposed of.. <br />
