3. Whether a situation is incidental or requires an emergency- response must be <br />determined on a case-by-case basis. However, the prime component is knowledge <br />and understanding of the chemical, its hazards and proper handling procedures. This <br />information can be found in the MSDS books. <br />Other factors that play a role in this determination are the quantity released, <br />ventilation considerations, confined space considerations, and available personal <br />protective equipment. <br />A person reporting and/or investigating a release must determine what the <br />circumstances are, then determine the capabilities of the personnel available <br />soi%-Y <br />response. PROCEDURE FOR AN EMERGENCY RESPONSE to a hazardous material release: <br />Note: More specific spill response procedures are found in the Emergency Spil' <br />Response Plan. <br />The person(s) who witnesses or first discovers a spill, a release or an imminent threat of <br />a release or encounters an unusual chemical odor should: <br />I . Give immediate verbal warning to people in the surrounding area. <br />2. EVACUATE the immediate area. Do not stay in the "danger zone" of the <br />material. <br />3. ISOLATE the area. Do not allow anyone to enter the area. <br />4. CONTACT a Supervisor, the Safety Dept. or others as needed for assistance. <br />5. Follow it procedures as outlined below. <br />E <br />ir-i <br />
