konudakis Firewood, Inc.
gallons per minute per foot(gpm/ft) (USGS, 1989).
Regional groundwater flow in the site area is generally in a northwesterly direction, toward the San
Joaquin River Delta. Published data from the San Joaquin Flood Control and Water Conservation
District (Fall 1998) indicate that the current depth to groundwater in the vicinity the site is
approximately 65 feet below grade.
1.3 Environmental Health Department Site Investigation
On September 2, 2009, the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department (EHD)
advanced three (3) soil borings (B1, B2, and 133) within the confines of the abandoned storm water
basin. Ground Zero Analysis, Inc. (Ground Zero) reviewed EHD field notes. The field notes
indicated that the borings were advanced to 14, 20, and 16 feet below grade surface (bgs),
respectively. Soil cuttings were used to backfill the borings. There was no chain-of-custody
documentation included with the analytical results from the EHD 2009 investigation.
Sludge and water samples were collected from the culvert (Pit) located just south of boring B2.
The Pit was the last catch basin in the storm drain system before storm water entered the now
abandoned storm water basin.
Field data and analytical results provided to Ground Zero indicate selected soil samples from B-2
and B-3 were analyzed for the following:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg), diesel range organics (DROs), kerosene
range organics (KROs), and motor oil range organics (MORO) by EPA method
8015/8015B
• CAM 17 metals by EPA method 6020/6020A
Field data and analytical results provided to Ground Zero indicate a sludge sample labeled as Pit
Solids was analyzed for the following:
• TPHg, DROs, KROs, MORO by EPA method 8015/8015B
• CAM 17 metals by EPA method 6020/6020A
• Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs)by EPA method 8260B
Field data and analytical results provided to Ground Zero indicate water samples were collected
from the pit, labeled as Pit and Pit Amber (it is assumed that the word "Amber" designation refers
to the sample container) analyzed for the following:
• TPHg, DROs, KROs, MORO by EPA method 8015/8015B
• VOCs by EPA method 8260B
1.4 Summary of EHD Site Investigation
The results of the EHD Site Investigation indicated that soil samples collected from B-3 at depths
of 13.5 and 14.0 feet below grade contained diesel range organics at concentrations of 3,180
milligrams per kilogram (mg/Kg) and 9,660 mg/Kg, respectively. The Pit Solids contained 2,430
mg/Kg of motor oil range organics. All other analyzed petroleum range and VOC constituents
were not reportable above laboratory detection limits. The metals were below Environmental
Screening Levels (ESLs) established by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board—San
G:IGROUNDZEILIONUDAKIS1ReportslSite Assessment and Excavation Report.doc March 2010
