ionudakis Firewood, Inc.
two trucks returned to the Site so that the contents could be inspected by EHD. A total of 173.73
tons of excavated soil was hauled to Forward. Manifests provided by Forward are included as
Attachment E.
The PID was not functioning properly and the extent of contamination was determined by odor
and confirmed with laboratory analysis conducted via 24-hour turn around. The flame ionization
detector could not be used at the Site due to anomalous readings (likely methane) from organic
materials associated with site activities. The PID pump assembly, porous filter, detector and lamp
were very dirty and required cleaning. PID service documentation is included as Attachment F.
Ground Zero consulted with EHD regarding the locations for confirmation soil sample collection
at the bottom of the excavation and along each sidewall. The soil samples were collected in 3-
inch brass sleeves, sealed with Teflon® tape, capped, uniquely labeled, and stored in an ice chest
refrigerated to a temperature of approximately 4°C pending shipment under chain of custody
protocol to Argon.
Samples collected during the confirmation work were analyzed for the following:
• TEPHd, TEPHk, and TEPHmo by EPA method 8015M
• BTEX by EPA method 8021B
Prior to leaving the site on February 18, 2010 the remaining impacted soil was covered and
secured with visqueen. On February 19, 2010, the results of the excavation pit samples were
submitted to EHD and permission to backfill was granted. The remaining impacted soil was
removed and the excavation was backfilled by Mr. Thorpe, under the observation of Mr.
Vasquez, using the stockpiled clean overburden removed prior to contamination excavation and
native soil from the Site.
Sample locations are shown in Figure 4. A cross-section of the excavation pit showing boring and
sample locations is included as Figure 5. Field Notes are included as Attachment B-3.
4.4 Excavation Analytical Results
All analyzed constituents were not reportable above laboratory detection limits. Excavation Extents
analytical data are summarized in Table 7 and the Laboratory Analytical Report is included as
Attachment C-4.
4.5 Stockpile Sample Collection
Soil from four locations in the stockpile were collected in 3-inch brass sleeves, sealed with
Teflon® tape, capped, uniquely labeled, and stored in an ice chest refrigerated to a temperature of
approximately 4°C pending shipment under chain of custody protocol to Argon.
The samples were composited by Argon and analyzed for the following:
• TEPHd, TEPHk, and TEPHmo by EPA method 8015M
• BTEX by EPA method 8021B
• CAM 17 metals by EPA method 6020/6020A
G:IGROUNDZEILIONUDAKIS1ReportslSite Assessment and Excavation Report.doc March 2010
