Mr Michael Infurna
July 21,2006
Page 2
issued from the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District for operation of
the SVE system
To conduct the SVE and AS/SVE pilot test, two VEWs consisting of 60-feet deep
wells designated VEW-1 and VEW-2,were installed in the area of the former
UST VEW-1 was located approximately 20-feet east of monitoring well MW-1,in
the center of the source area, and VEW-2 was located approximately 20-feet south
east of VEW-1 Figure 2 shows the location of these wells and Table 1 provides
the well construction details, while boring logs for VEW-1 and VEW-2 are
included in Attachment A
The drilling and installation of these wells was conducted on March 13,2006 using
a truck mounted hollow-stem auger drilling ng equipped with 10-inch diameter
hollow stem augers The wells were completed with 3-inch diameter schedule
40 polyvinyl chloride (PVC) The screen was completed using 0 020-inch slot
screen from 20-feet below ground surface (bgs) to 60-feet bgs
Well MW-1 was purged and sampled prior to starting the SVE pilot test and
following shut down of the AS/SVE test The well was sampled for total
petroleum hydrocarbons in the gasoline range (I'PH/g),benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX), and fuel oxygenates by EPA method
8260 The samples were submitted to Kiff Analytical,an EPA-certified analytical
laboratory located in Davis, California for analysis A chain-of-custody form was
used to record possession of the samples from time of collection to arrival at the
laboratory Chain-of-custody forms and groundwater analytical results are
included in Attachment B
The SVE-only pilot test was performed on May 3,2006 for approximately eight
hours A gas-fired thermal/catalytic oxidizer with a 10-horsepower (hp) rotary
lobe vacuum pump rated at 250-cubic feet per minute (cfm) at 10-inches of
mercury (in Hg) vacuum was utilized to extract soil vapor from the wells The
vacuum blower creates an airflow and induced vacuum in subsurface soil to
volatilize organic compounds The vacuum pump was connected to the well
casing of VEW-1,and a flow meter, sample port, and pressure gauge were
connected in-line Air emissions from the SVE test were treated using the
thermal/catalytic oxidizer to provide combustion of hydrocarbons at
1,400 degrees Fahrenheit
The AS-only pilot test was performed on May 4,2006 A 5 hp compressor
providing 23 cfm at 100-pounds per square inch (psi) was used to blow air into a
• two foot screen placed ten feet below the water level in the existing well MW-1
P\28000\128253-T&T Z ruck.tng SVE\Documents\SVL Report amw dot
