Laboratory Analyses
Locations 1, 2 and 3 — Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Metals
Soil samples obtained from Locations 1 through 4 will be analyzed by ATL under standard ten
working-day turn-around-time(TAT)for the following:
• Selected soil samples will be analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) and
diesel (TPHd) following Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Test Method 8015B modified
(160 samples budgeted).
• A minimum of two soil samples from each boring with the highest TPH levels will be analyzed for
Title 22 metals following EPA Test Method 6010B (mercury Test Method 7471A) (40 samples
budgeted). Samples with metal concentrations greater than or equal to ten times the Soluble
Threshold Limit Concentration (STLC) will be analyzed for soluble metals using the Waste
Extraction Test(WET)method(36 samples budgeted).
• Soluble metals that exceed the STLC values will be further analyzed using the EPA Toxicity
Characteristic Leaching Procedure(TCLP)extraction method(12 samples budgeted).
• A minimum of four randomly selected soil samples from each location will be analyzed for pH
using EPA Test Method 9045 (16 samples budgeted).
Location 4 -Asbestos
Soil samples obtained from Location 4 will be analyzed by EMSL for the following under standard ten
working-day TAT:
• Each soil sample will be analyzed for asbestos type and content per EPA Test Method
600/R-93/116 using polarized light microscopy(PLM)(40 samples budgeted).
• Samples with reported asbestos concentrations less than 1 percent may be re-analyzed for
asbestos using PLM 400 point-counting or transmission electron microscopy methods (10
samples budgeted).
Laboratory QA/QC Procedures
ATL will perform QA/QC procedures for each method of analysis with specificity for each analyte
listed in the test method's QA/QC. QA/QC measures as applicable will include the following:
• One method blank for every ten samples, batch of samples or type of matrix, whichever is more
frequent.
• One sample analyzed in duplicate for every ten samples, batch of samples or type of matrix,
whichever is more frequent.
• One spiked sample for every ten samples, batch of samples or type of matrix, whichever is more
frequent, with spike made at ten times the detection limit or at the analyte level.
The laboratory will be instructed to homogenize the soil samples prior to analysis for total metals in
accordance with Contract 06A1141 requirements.
Stockton State Route 99 Improvement Project,Task Order No.82 Caltrans Contract 06A1 141,EA 10-3A 1001
Project No.59200-06-82 -5- December 30,2009
