4.3 Personal Hygiene <br /> • Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, smoking, or any practice that increases the probability <br /> of hand-in-mouth transfer and ingestion of material is prohibited in any area designated as being <br /> potentially impacted. <br /> • Hands and face must be thoroughly washed upon leaving the work area, and before eating, <br /> drinking, or other non-project activities. <br /> • Kneeling, sitting, leaning, or general contact with potentially impacted surfaces, or with surfaces <br /> suspected of being potentially impacted by hazardous materials (i.e., puddles, mud, leachate, etc.) <br /> should be avoided. <br /> • Medicine and alcohol can potentiate the effects of exposure to toxic chemicals. Personnel should <br /> take neither if the likelihood of such potentiation exists. Being under the influence of alcohol <br /> during the field activities is prohibited. <br /> 4.4 Work Zone Controls <br /> Except for traffic controls discussed in Section 3.2, regulated areas will not be required for asbestos <br /> sampling activities. However, only qualified site workers, as listed in Section 2.2 will be allowed in <br /> areas where asbestos sampling is being performed. With the exception of restricting(regulating) access <br /> to asbestos sample areas, formal work zones will not be required for this site. <br /> 4.5 Code of Safe Practices <br /> General safe work practices to be titilized by all project personnel are summarized below; <br /> • All nonessential personnel will be kept clear of work areas. <br /> • Adequate signs and safety devices will be installed on equipment. <br /> • All site employees will wear assigned personal protective equipment and level of protection as <br /> designated by the Site Safety Officer. <br /> • Eating, drinking, smoking, chewing gum or tobacco, or application of cosmetics is allowed in <br /> designated areas only. <br /> • At a minimum, all personnel will wash with soap and water before lunch, using the restroom, and <br /> at the end of work. The face and hands shall be washed before eating, drinking, smoking, chewing <br /> gum, applying cosmetics, etc. <br /> • Over-the-counter drugs and prescription medications must be reported to the Site Safety Officer for <br /> clearance before an employee is allowed to work near drill rig or other heavy equipment. <br /> • When portable electric tools and equipment are used,three-wire extension cords are required. <br /> • Employees will advise their supervisors of any malfunctioning equipment immediately. <br /> • An ongoing safety maintenance program for tools and equipment will be instituted. Inspections <br /> will occur on a regular basis to ensure parts are secure and intact.
