!
RM 2 of 2
If this unit is used for irrigated row, field , and orchard crops , the
main limitations are a high water table and slow permeability . Furrow,
border , corrugation , and sprinkler irrigation systems are suited to
this soil . Because of the slow permeability of this soil , the length
of runs should be adjusted to permit adequate infiltration of water .
The application of water should be regulated so that water does not
stand on the surface and damage the crops . A cropping system that
includes crop rotation or a cover crop , use of crop residue and proper
tillage improves soil ti | th and increases fertility and water
infiltration . If this unit is used for dry | and grain crops , the main
limitation is low rainfall during the growing season . Because
precipitation is not sufficient for annual cropping , a cropping system
that includes small grain and summer fallow is most suitable . Crops
respond to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer .
If this unit is used for homesite development , the main limitations are
slow permeability, high shrink-swell , and low strength . If the soil is
used for septic tank absorption fields , the limitation of slow
permeability can be overcome by increasing the size of the absorption
field . If the density of housing is moderate to high , community sewage
systems are needed to prevent contamination of water supplies as a
result of seepage from on-site sewage disposal systems . If buildings
are constructed on this soil , properly designing foundations and
footings and diverting runoff away from buildings help to prevent
structural damage because of shrinking and swelling . Buildings and
roads should be designed to offset the limited ability of the soil in
this unit to support a load .
The map unit is in capability units IIs-3 ( 17) , irrigated , and IVs-3
( 17) , non- irrigated .
9/18/8T
