Hwy. 132
Vernalis, CA 95385
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHSIEHD)
has reviewed the "Preliminary Site Assessment Work Plan" dated April 8, 1999, that was
prepared by Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (AGE) on behalf of the above referenced
site, and has the following comments.
On February 24, 1999 one 10,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tank (UST#3),
one 5,000-gallon gasoline UST (tank#2), one 5,000-gallon diesel UST (tank#1),
associated piping and dispensers were removed from the site. Petroleum hydrocarbon
odors and soil discoloration were noted beneath the tanks and the west dispenser
island. Soil samples for analysis were collected from the bottom of the tank pits at 12
feet below surface grade (bsg) and from beneath the dispensers at 4 feet bsg. A grab
water sample for analysis was collected from the bottom north end of the#3 tank pit.
Soil analytical results evidenced contamination up to 4,000 parts per billion (ppb) total
petroleum hydrocarbons as gas (TPHg), 7.7-ppb benzene, 59-ppb toluene, 130-ppb
ethylbenzene, 180-ppb xylene, and 320-ppb methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE). Water
analytical results evidenced 37,000-ppb TPHg, 190-ppb benzene, 1,100-ppb toluene,
1,700-ppb ethylbenzene, 2,600-ppb xylene and 3,200-ppb MTBE.
The work plan proposes to begin the investigation of the lateral and vertical extent of
petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in soil and groundwater with the advancement of
six hollow-stem auger boreholes. Two of the borings will be located in the #3 tank pit,
one at the north end and one at the south end. These two borings will be advanced to
depth to obtain vertical definition of soil contamination. A grab water sample will be
collected from first encountered groundwater in the southern boring. These two borings
shall be abandoned by backfilling neat cement grout with a tremmie pipe from total depth
to surface grade.
The remaining four borings will be completed as shallow groundwater monitoring wells.
Built to encounter first groundwater, the estimated depth of these wells will not be
greater than 30 feet bsg. One well is proposed to be placed between tank pit#3 and the
west dispenser, the other three will surround the area to the east, northeast and
northwest.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
