r
4.0 SoiUGroundwater Investigation
rDue to the poor housekeeping procedures at PMag observed during the site walk portion of the
Phase I Assessment, it was necessary to assess subsurface soil at the northern extent of the site.
rIn addition, potential soil and/or groundwater impact caused by the presence of leaking UST sites
within a one-quarter mile radius of the subject property needed to be addressed.
r
4.1 SOIL BORING
On November 22, 1991, a soil boring was completed at the north end of the subject property,
approximately half way between Port Road 21 and the A.T. and S.F. Railroad spur
(see Figure 2). The purpose of this boring was to address the potential impact of subsurface soils
near the northern extent of the property. The boring was drilled to a depth of 31.5 feet below
surface.
The boring was drilled with a hollow-stemmed auger to facilitate the collection of soil samples
during drilling operations. Soil samples were collected in brass tubes at five foot intervals through
the hollow-stemmed auger by advancing a 2 inch I.D. "California Modified" sampler ahead of
the auger tip. Once samples were collected, the brass tube ends were covered with aluminum foil
and plastic caps and sealed with tape to restrict the loss of any volatile compounds.
No trace of contamination was observed to be present by the field engineer at the time of drilling.
In addition, no levels of volatile organic compounds were recorded by an Organic Vapor
Analyzer (OVA), equipped with a photoionization detector, during the drilling. Since no
contamination was detected in any of the soil samples by the OVA meter or the visual inspection,
sample S131-1 was submitted for analysis as any potential spill contamination would be located
close to the surface. After packaging and labeling, the samples were shipped to PACE
Laboratories in Novato, California for analysis.
2
rnn2o691A MaR 17.>p;
