 i
E e.J Work Plao
{ Canepa's Car Wash
November 17, 1998
Page -2-
f 3.1 SITE PREPARATION
Prior to the fieldwork, drilling permits will be obtained from the San Joaquin County PHS/EIiD. The
proposed boring locations will be marked with white paint and Underground Service Alert (USA) will be
notified at least 72 hours in advance of the fieldwork. However, because the proposed boring locations
` l are on private property, utilities contacted by USA will not mark their lutes past property lines and into
the site. Therefore, it is the responsibility of Canepa's Car Wash to locate and identify underground
utilities in and near the work area. The PHS/EHD will be notified of the fieldwork schedule at least 72
k : I hours in advance.
3.2 DRILLING PROCEDURES
The fieldwork will include the installation of six borings, three of which will be completed as monitor
wells. The proposed locations shown in Figure 2, Appendix A. The boreholes will be drilled by
Spectrum Exploration, Inc. (License #512268) under the supervision of a Condor geologist. Prior to
_ - commencement of work each day, a tailgate safety meeting will be held and the site-specific Health and
Safety Plan will be discussed with and presented to all crew members for their signatures.
The borings will be drilled using 6-inch O.D., continuous-flight, hollow-stem auger. The monitor well
borings will be drilled to a depth of 45 feet bgs. The soil borings will be drilled to a depth of
approximately 35 feet. The auger will be steam cleaned before each borehole is drilled. The soil
sampling equipment (i .e., split-spoon) will be cleaned prior to collecting each sample. The cleaning
procedures will consist of washing the sampling spoon in a solution of laboratory-grade, non-phosphate
detergent and hydrocarbon-free water, and double rinsing with hydrocarbon-free water.
l
Upon completion of the drilling and sampling, the three soil borings will be grouted with a cement slurry
containing 3 to 5 percent bentonite. The slung will be tremied into the borehole to avoid bridging. All
decontamination rinsate produced during the field work will be placed in a 55-gallon drum, sealed,
labeled, and left on site pending laboratory analyses. Disposal of hazardous materials, if any, will be the
responsibility of Canepa' s Car Wash.
I
3.3 SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples will be collected at five-foot intervals from the surface to the capillary fringe in all six
borings. If significant lithological changes are encountered during the installation of the monitor wells, a
soil sample will be collected from each significant lithologic unit for laboratory analysis. Soil samples
will be collected in each borehole using a California-modified, split-spoon sampler fitted with three
clean, brass liners. During the sampling, the split-spoon sampler will be driven ahead of the auger. The
uppermost liner will be discarded. The middle sample liner will be prepared, as described below, for
possible shipment to the laboratory and the bottommost liner will be used for geological logging and for
field screening using an organic vapor analyzer (OVA). The soil samples will be logged according to the
I
Unified Soil Classification System. Drilling logs will be prepared and will contain field observations
including soil type, estimated moisture content, presence of staining or odor, and field OVA
measurements.
L CONDOR
