Mr. Steven Sasson
March 14, 2001
Item #12: Observed oil and water on ground near shop and paint contaminated water
discarded on ground. Waste paint to be disposed as hazardous waste.
The paint-contaminated water is generated from soaking of the tip of a paint
sprayer in a 5 gallon bucket of water to prevent clogging. The paint is a
water-based acrylic similar to a typical house paint (MSDS enclosed). The
actual volume of paint in this solution is extremely low. While we agree that
this material should not be disposed of on the ground, we feel that is it is not
appropriate to identify it as a hazardous waste. Typical sewage treatment
processes are adequate to treat small volumes of water-based paints such
as this. If the paint were in its concentrated form, it would be disposed of as
a hazardous waste. However, in this extremely diluted form, the sewage
disposal system will be adequate to safely treat this small amount of paint.
Item #19: Stored hazardous waste on site longer than 90 days.
These materials have been removed as required. The Cal EPA
Identification number has been reactivated as identified above.
Documentation of this disposal will be provided under a separate
correspondence.
Item #20: Drums containing waste oil are not properly labeled.
The proper labels have been purchased and will be used as required.
Item #21: Observed waste oil stored in open containers.
Maintenance staff has been trained on proper storage and handling of used
oil. Any container that contains used oil will be properly labeled and
covered at all times except when adding or removing material.
Item #31: Receipts from disposal of used batteries not present on site.
The used battery disposal company is now providing the proper
documentation of disposal. This documentation is available at the facility.
