FLUOR DANIEL GTI
TASK 2: SOIL BORINGS/SOIL SAMPLING
Fluor Daniel GTI will supervise the advancement of six hydraulically-driven angled borings to a true vertical
depth of approximately 15 feet below ground surface (BGS) using a truck-mounted direct-penetration
GeoprobeTM rig at the locations shown on the field sketch include as Attachment 1. Boring locations may
be adjusted in the field, based on subsurface obstructions and general field conditions. The sampling rig
will drive a 2-inch-diameter by 2-foot-long stainless steel barrel lined with 2-inch-diameter by 6-inch-long
brass sample tubes or 2-foot-long clear plastic tubing at each location.
Soil samples will be collected from the borings at 15 feet BGS. The 15-foot sample will be collected in
native soil approximately 3 feet beneath the end of each of the three USTs. All sampling equipment will be
steam cleaned prior to sampling the soil at each interval. Each soil sample will be screened for
hydrocarbon vapors using a photoionization detector(PID). Soils encountered during drilling will be logged
using the Unified Soil Classification System by a Fluor Daniel GTI field geologist, working under the
supervision of a California registered geologist. One sample tube from each sampling interval will be
sealed with Teflon sheets, capped, taped, labeled, and placed on ice in an insulated container. Each
sample will be analyzed by a State-certified analytical laboratory for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and
xylenes(BTEX), methyl4ert-butyl-ether(MTBE), and total petroleum hydrocarbons-as-gasoline (TPH-G) by
EPA methods 8020/8015 modified, and Total Lead following EPA method 6010.
Using the geoprobe technology, no soil will be generated during sampling. Water generated by steam
cleaning will be contained and temporarily stored on site in DOT-approved 55-gallon drums pending
characterization and disposal.
TASK 3: GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
Due to the shallow depth to groundwater, expected at the site, groundwater may be encountered in the
boreholes. If there is sufficient groundwater recharge in the boreholes following extraction of the geoprobe
sampling rods, water samples will be collected from two water-bearing borings and analyzed for BTEX,
MTBE,and TPH-G using EPA methods 8020/8015 modified. If detected, the presence of MTBE in the
groundwater will be confirmed using EPA method 8260.
TASK 4: REPORT PREPARATION
Fluor Daniel GTI will prepare a report summarizing the data collected under the scope of work detailed
above. The report will document the methods and results of the work, summarize laboratory analytical
results, and include appropriate maps. Following submittal of the summary report, Robert H. Lee and
Associates will submit the Tank Reline Permit Application for review and approval by the SJCDHS.
0472wkP.wk4
Pre-Tank-Relining Soil Assessment Work Plan February 3,1997
The Southland Corporation,4501 Pershing Avenue,Stockton,CA 2
