ORC TECHNICAL BULLETIN # V.6
Oxygen Release Compound,ORC®
Qualitative Guidelines for Soil
Remediation Applications (Biopiles)
ORC has applications m the remediation of soil biopiles REGENESIS has
conducted a limited number of trials with ORC in biopiles with promising results
Essentially, ORC should be used at concentrations between I and I% by weight of soil
At concentrations above 1%, pH may become an issue, depending on the buffering
capacity of the soil This may not be a factor as application levels above I% may become
cost prohibitive before the technical limits develop It will cost approximately $24 per
cubic yard for every 1% of ORC applied by weight, in addition to cost of mixmg
A single application should last 6 months and serve as an effective polishing agent at sites
where closure is imminent The asymtotic nature of soil clean-up, that puts remediation
on a half-life curve, dictates that considerable resources may be still be necessary for the
final clean-up levels to be achieved It should be noted that the commercial, non-
intercalated (slow-release) forms of calcium peroxide can be pH hmitmg at levels of about
25% and will only last about a month, thus requiring many more additional applications
relative to ORC
ORC use in soil cleanup is a specialized application One should generally eliminate the
ability to use forced air to provide oxygen to a soil pile Having met this requirement,
solid peroxygens then become a candidate technology. Factors that may disqualify forced
air technology in favor of ORC include the need to avoid an active system or the inability
for such a system to work Active systems may present installation and monitoring
problems, particularly in remote or inclement conditions Also, urban factors such as
nuisance issues or vandalism may have to be considered Also, forced air may volatilize
pollutants in conflict with regulatory standards or may be ineffective in heavy soils where
air becomes channeled
REGENESIS -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bioremediation Products 27130A Paseo Espada, Ste 1407, San Juan Capistrano,CA 92675
Phone 714-443-3136 Fax 714-443-3140
