Chevrnn U.S.A.
Page 27
During the attempt to sample monitoring well MW-2 it was observed that upon
^ removing the Christy-box lid, water was observed in the vault with floating oil and/or
gasoline. The water was removed prior to attempting to remove the well's locking-cap,
The locking-cap was observed to be loose and easily removed. Upon removing the well
cap, oil stains along the inside of the upper portion of the well casing were
a observed. These stains had apparently originated when petroleum contaminated water
had flown down the insides of the well casing.
It had been names&Moore's intention to sample the previously existing wells and
to compare those results, specifically monitoring well MW-2,to the recently
constructed monitoring well MW-2A. It was suspicious that the results from the two
adjacent wells, MW-2 and MW-2A,had such significant differences in test results. It
:. became apparent from the observations of monitoring well MW-2,that surface
.w
contamination was entering the well and contaminating the groundwater. Dames&Moore
i observed automobiles frequently parked over well MW-2, from which oil residue may have
originated.
At tate request of Chevron USA, Dames&Moore re-constructed the Christy-bores and
weli•heads of each of the original monitoring wells, MW-1, MW-2, MW-3, MW-4, MW-5, MW-
6, and MW-7. Dames &Moore's July 1, 1990 report summarized the re-construction of
r
these welis'Christy-boxes and well-heads. A copy of that report is included in
Appendix f=, at the end of this report. The photographs on Plate 2 in the July 1, 1990
report show the surface and the old Christy-box of monitoring well MW-2. These
photographs illustrate the oil-stained asphalt surrounding the well, the water in the
k`+ well head and the general condition of the Christy-box and lack of proper sealing.
_ l 15000-205-044 _
