Since that time, a limited soil
assessment and the installation of a vapor extraction well have been achieved but, due to limited
school funds, no other assessment or remedial work has been completed. PHS/EHD understands that
the school budget will allow some work to occur in the next few years but this work is restricted due to
limited funding. Using these funds to strictly conduct further soil and groundwater assessment will
delay any initiation of cleanup for several years.
Therefore, in order to proceed with cleanup at this site in a reasonable time frame and to maximize the
limited resources of the school district, PHS/EHD recommended the initiation of remedial action in the
area of known impact concurrent with the additional assessment needed to satisfy regulatory
requirements. This current proposal will provide additional site assessment data to add to the data
collected to date, and provide the opportunity to begin to reduce the high levels of contamination
documented beneath the former tank pit area at the site. The grab groundwater sample will provide an
indication as to the current groundwater quality and, based on these results, the priority for additional
groundwater assessment can be determined.
PHS/EHD has issued permit#005750 for the work proposed in the workplan and the workplan
addendum.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss this letter in more detail, please contact Linda Turkatte,
Senior RENS, at (209) 468-3441.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Linda A.
