i •
WASTE DISCHARGE REQUIREMENTS ORDER NO. 5-00-021 -2-
RJM ENTERPRISES,BROWNS LAKE RANCH,AND
RIVERCREST VINEYARDS,INC.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
6. During wine production, various chemicals are used as either an additive, a fining agent, or as a
cleaner/sanitizer. These compounds may include the following:
Wine Additive Wine Fining Agent Cleaner/Sanitizer
Citric Acid Bentonite Caustic Soda
Fumaric Acid Carbon Sodium Hypochlorite
Malic Acid Copper Sulfate Chlorinated Trisodium Phosphate
Tartaric Acid Nylon Polymer Caustic/Wetting Agent
Diammonium Phosphate Potassium Bitartrate
Potassium Metabisulfite
7. Winery wastewaters are screened at the drains and at the sump prior to discharge to the unlined
pond. The sump is at the north end of the unlined pond. Screenings will be collected for off-site
disposal.
8. The winery will expand its operations in five phases over a period of eight years. Discharges are
planned to increase from the currant rate of approximately 3,000 gallons per day(0"P d) to a
maximum of 150,000 gpd upon full expansion of the winery, corresponding to a 20,000 ton
crush. Maximum seasonal flows generally occur from August to October during the grape
crushing season. Flows will be metered at the process wastewater/stormwater sump.
9. Compound concentrations in the winery wastewater are the highest during the crush season,
typically in the following ranges:
Compound Units Concentration Range'
Biochemical Oxygen Demand.'(BOD5)2 mg/l 676—4220
Total Suspended Solids mg/l 56-300
Settleable Solids mg/1 1.5 -2.0
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) mg/l 1140-4250
Sulfate mg/l 84-215
Nitrate(as Nitrate) mg/l ND—238
1 Samples collected in September, October, and November during the 1999 crush season.
z Five-day,20°Celsius Biochemical Oxygen Demand.
ND denotes not detected.
10. Winery wastewater is discharged to an unlined pond for evaporation and percolation. The
dimensions of the pond are approximately 600 by 150 feet by 14 feet in depth, with a holding
capacity of 660,000 cubic feet. Approximately five feet of the pond is below grade. Solids that
accumulate on the pond bottom will routinely be scraped for removal to an agricultural user.
