Well Construction
Three monitoring wells were installed at the site on 11 August 2000
MW 1: drilled 32 feet, bottom of completed well 31 feet below ground surface
(bgs).
MW2: drilled 40 feet, bottom of completed well 39 feet bgs.
MW3: drilled 30 feet, bottom of completed well 28 feet bgs.
The wells were drilled by Cascade Drilling of Rancho Cordova. The equipment
was a hollow stem auger rig with a hammer and split spoon sampler. The augers
were nominal 10 inch outside diameter(OD). Split-spoon samples(18 inches)
were taken every 2 feet throughout the boring. The cuttings logs were prepared
from the split-spoon samples. The highest occurrence of the water table was
assumed to correspond to a color change from brown to dark grey (i.e. from
oxidized to reducing) in the cuttings. In wells 1 and 2 this transition was at higher
elevations than the water table on the day of drilling. The top of the screened
interval was chosen to include the transition. Well 3 is next to the river and the
water level elevation in the well was the same as the river surface. This was
several feet above the transition to reducing conditions. The top of the screened
section in well 3 was positioned at the water table on the day of drilling.
The casing string was installed through the hollow augers and sand was put in
place while slowly withdrawing the augers. In every case the sand pack extended
above the water table. When the sand was in place, the augers were completely
removed and the bentonite and grout were placed. Diagrams of each well are
attached. A site plan showing the monitoring well locations is also attached. The
elevations and locations of the well heads were determined by a licensed surveyor
and the pertinent details are entered on the diagrams.
B. Well Development
Date: 14 August 2000
The wells were developed with a 0.5 hp submersible pump delivering 16 gallons
per minute. Water discharged by the development pump was directed into the
