INFORMATION SHEET
ORDER NO. 5-01-172
EAST-SIDE WINERY DBA OAK RIDGE VINEYARDS
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
East-Side Winery operates a winery at 6100 E. Highway 12, east of Lodi in San Joaquin County. The
winery has operated in the same location since at least 1958. The winery is on a 9.98 acre parcel;
wastewater ponds are located on 23 acres approximately 2,500 feet north of the winery and adjacent to
the Mokelumne River. East-Side Winery's Monitoring and Reporting Program was updated in May
2000 to characterize the wastewater effluent quality. East-Side Winery was also required to install
groundwater monitoring wells at that time. The winery crushes approximately 16,500 tons of grapes
each year. Wastewater flows are not metered; the estimated flow rate for the winery is between 82,500
to 165,000 gallons per day during the crush season. Operations at this winery are anticipated to remain
relatively stable in the future based on economic considerations.
Presently, East-Side Winery is discharging winery wastewater to the "Deep Ponds" and stillage to the
"Shallow Ponds." Based on samples collected from the groundwater monitoring wells, the discharge
has impacted groundwater quality. East-Side Winery is required by these WDRs to substantially
improve the wastewater treatment system. The proposed improvements include constructing a lined
advanced integrated treatment pond with aerators, and discharging the treated wastewater to cropland
at agronomic rates. The existing wastewater ponds will be converted to cropland. A time schedule has
been included in the WDRs for East-Side Winery to design, build, and operate the proposed system.
Solid wastes, which presently are stored at the wastewater pond area for composting or are tilled back
into cropland, will not be stored at the wastewater pond area. Alternative storage and disposal methods
are required under these WDRs.
Depth to shallow groundwater at the wastewater pond area is approximately 10 to 30 feet depending on
the location. The shallow soils are sandy/silts to silty/sands with relatively high permeability rates.
Process water is obtained from an industrial supply well located at the winery. .
Under these Waste Discharge Requirements, monitoring of the winery wastewater effluent, treatment
pond water, and underlying groundwater are required. Additional groundwater monitoring wells will
be installed to monitor shallow groundwater. Maximum nitrogen and BOD loading rates for the land
application area is specified in the WDRs.
TRO:6/14/01
C.\My OocumaiaVdiucllymous\Wycis\O'9ricn\ESW in(o.doc
