u
i
A chain-of-custody form was used to record pmession of the sample from time of collection to its arrival
at the laboratory. When the samples are shipped, the person in custody of them relinquished the samples
by signing the chain-of-custody torn and noting the time of shipment. 71e sample-control officer at the
11 - laboratory verify sample integrity and confirms that it was collected in the proper container, preserved
t. correctly, and that there is an adequate volume for analysis.
The sample was assigned a unique]og number for identificationthroughout analysis and reporting. The
tog number was recorded on the chain-of-custody Corm and in :he legally-required log book maintained
by the laboratory. 77te sample description, date received, client's name, and any other relevant information
was recorded.
1.::
_. 3.3 Ana! cal uall Assurance
+ In addition to routine calibration of the analytigl instruments with standards and blanks, the analyst is
C • required to run duplicates and spikes on 10 rant of the
p Pe analyses to insure an added measure of
precision and accuracy. Accuracy is also verified through the following:
L U.S. Environniontal Protection Agency(FPA) and State certification programs,
2 Participation in an inter-laboratory or'round-robin'quality assurance program.
3. Verification of results with an alternative method. For example, calcium may be deter-
mined by atomic absorption, ion chromatography,or titrimetric methods. Volatile organics
may be determined through either purge and trap or liquid-liquid extraction methods.
i
3.4 Miscellaneous Checks oP Accura
Where trace analysis is involved, purity of the solvents, reagents, and gases employed is of great concern.
The laboratory maintains a se.-vice contract on all major instrumentation; gas chromatographs, atomic
absorption, ion chromatography, and total organic carbon analyzers are all serviced and maintained
regularly.
The above program is more than sulEcient for most needs. Additional quality assurance, such as spikes
and duplicates on all analyses, will be provided if requested.
r
