the extent practicable. The sampling plan will generally follow the Office of Emergency and
Remedial Response (OERR) Directive 9345.3-02 (May, 1991) which provides the guidance for
the management of IDW during RDFS field investigations.
In addition other legal and practical considerations that may affect the handling of IDW will be
considered.
The procedures that will be followed for handling the IDW are identified in this section. The
procedures have enough flexibility to allow the site investigation team to use its professional
judgment on the proper method for the disposal of each type of IDW generated at the LNC site.
Used PPE and Disposable Sampling Equipment
Used PPE and disposable equipment will be double-bagged and placed in a municipal refuse
dumpster. These wastes are not hazardous and can be sent to a municipal landfill. Any PPE and
disposable equipment to be disposed of that can still be reused will be rendered inoperable before
disposal in the refuse dumpster.
Decontamination Fluids
Decontamination fluids that will be generated during this field sampling event will consist of
VOCs, deionized water, residual contaminants. and water with non-phosphate detergent. The
decontamination fluid will be placed in Department of Transportation(DOT)-approved 55-gallon
drums and labeled pending sampling to determine appropriate disposal.
Soil Cuttings
Soil cuttings generated during the subsurface soil investigation will be placed in Department of
Transportation (DOT)-approved 55-gallon drums. Once full, the top lid of the drums will be
sealed with USEPA custody seals. Hazardous waste labels containing required information(such
as sampling location, approximate depths, intervals of soil cuttings, and date and time of
collection)will be affixed to the side of the drums. The 55-gallon drums will be stored near the
M ain\D:AEnvironmentaI\LN CV\10152007.wpd 41
