A. Material for constructing the embankments shall be obtained
from excavation within the pond area. The area shall first
be cleared and grubbed to remove organic and other material
unsuitable for fill. It is estimated that such material will
amount to about 4 to 6 inches in depth on the average. All
such material shall be spread uniformly on the area east of
the pond site in a manner as directed by the Engineer to
maintain existing drainage patterns.
3 . 04 PLACEMENT OF EMBANKMENT FOR POND AND ACCESS ROAD
A. General
1. Material placed as embankment shall be deposited within
the lines and to the grades shown on the Drawings or as
directed by the Engineer . Embankment shall be placed
only on properly prepared surfaces which have been
inspected and approved by the Engineer .
2. Vegetation , rubbish, and other unsuitable material
within the area upon which engineered fill is to be
placed , shall be cleared and grubbed before fill is
started and shall be disposed of in an approved manner .
In no case will such objectionable material be allowed
to remain in or under the fill area. The area on which
the fill is to be placed shall be cleared of soil to a
minimum depth of 4 inches and scarified to the depth
shown on the drawings.
3. Embankment shall be dumped and spread in layers by a
scraper, bulldozer , or other approved method. During the
process of dumping and spreading all roots, debris , and
stones greater in size than specified under Materials ,
shall be removed.
4 . If the compacted surface of any layer of material is
determined to be too smooth to bond properly with the
succeeding layer , it shall be loosened by harrowing or
by another approved method before the succeeding layer
is placed.
B. Placement
1. Embankment shall be moisture conditioned to slightly in
excess of the optimum moisture content, placed in layers
eight inches or less in loose thickness , and compacted
to at least 95 percent of maximum dry density. The
layers of compacted fill shall be carried across the
entire width of the embankment. Each layer of all fills
and embankments shall be compacted by rolling with
approved sheepsfoot rollers or other approved equipment.
The travel of equipment on embankment shall be spread
EARTHWORK
02200-5
