A. Material for constructing the embankments shall be obtained <br /> from excavation within the pond area. The area shall first <br /> be cleared and grubbed to remove organic and other material <br /> unsuitable for fill. It is estimated that such material will <br /> amount to about 4 to 6 inches in depth on the average. All <br /> such material shall be spread uniformly on the area east of <br /> the pond site in a manner as directed by the Engineer to <br /> maintain existing drainage patterns. <br /> 3 . 04 PLACEMENT OF EMBANKMENT FOR POND AND ACCESS ROAD <br /> A. General <br /> 1. Material placed as embankment shall be deposited within <br /> the lines and to the grades shown on the Drawings or as <br /> directed by the Engineer . Embankment shall be placed <br /> only on properly prepared surfaces which have been <br /> inspected and approved by the Engineer . <br /> 2. Vegetation , rubbish, and other unsuitable material <br /> within the area upon which engineered fill is to be <br /> placed , shall be cleared and grubbed before fill is <br /> started and shall be disposed of in an approved manner . <br /> In no case will such objectionable material be allowed <br /> to remain in or under the fill area. The area on which <br /> the fill is to be placed shall be cleared of soil to a <br /> minimum depth of 4 inches and scarified to the depth <br /> shown on the drawings. <br /> 3. Embankment shall be dumped and spread in layers by a <br /> scraper, bulldozer , or other approved method. During the <br /> process of dumping and spreading all roots, debris , and <br /> stones greater in size than specified under Materials , <br /> shall be removed. <br /> 4 . If the compacted surface of any layer of material is <br /> determined to be too smooth to bond properly with the <br /> succeeding layer , it shall be loosened by harrowing or <br /> by another approved method before the succeeding layer <br /> is placed. <br /> B. Placement <br /> 1. Embankment shall be moisture conditioned to slightly in <br /> excess of the optimum moisture content, placed in layers <br /> eight inches or less in loose thickness , and compacted <br /> to at least 95 percent of maximum dry density. The <br /> layers of compacted fill shall be carried across the <br /> entire width of the embankment. Each layer of all fills <br /> and embankments shall be compacted by rolling with <br /> approved sheepsfoot rollers or other approved equipment. <br /> The travel of equipment on embankment shall be spread <br /> EARTHWORK <br /> 02200-5 <br />
