over the entire width and not concentrated in narrow
tracks . It is the intent to secure a uniformly graded,
dense, watertight dike.
2 . The density of the upper 6 inches of subgrade and of
each layer of fill shall be checked by the Engineer
after each layer has been compacted. Field density tests
shall be used to check the compaction of the fill
materials . Sufficient tests shall be made on each layer
by the Engineer to assure adequate compaction throughout
the entire area . If the dry densities are not
satisfactory , the Contractor will be required to
increase the weight of the roller or the number of
passes as required to produce the specified densities.
3. The finished surface shall be made reasonably smooth and
free from irregular surface changes , and to the
dimension shown on the plans.
3. 05 TRENCH EXCAVATION AND BEDDING
A. General
1. Excavation for all trenches shall be made to the depth
required for the installation of pipelines and conduits
at the grades indicated on the Drawings . Trench
excavation shall comprise and include the satisfactory
loosening , removing , loading , transporting , depositing ,
and compaction in the final location all materials , wet
and dry , necessary to be removed for purposes of
construction; the furnishing, placing , and removing of
all sheeting and bracing ; all pumping , draining , and
handling of water encountered in the excavations ; and
the supporting of structures above and below ground.
B. Excavation
1. All piping and conduits shall be installed in excavated
open trenches. The bottom of trenches shall be bedding
material, as specified herein.
2. The trench shall be excavated by machinery to just below
the required subgrade provided that the bottom of the
trench does not vary from the required subgrade by more
than 0 . 2 feet , and backfilled to grade with bedding
material.
3 . Rock shall be removed to a minimum 8 inch clearance
around the bottom and sides of piping and conduits and
backfilled with bedding material.
4 .
