1 • • <br /> YARIsLEs <br /> There were two events that occurred during the course of this study that had <br /> unquantified impacts on the site. The fust was the partial excavanon of <br /> contaminated soil upgradient of the barriers. During the backfilling of the <br />' excavation 500 pounds of pure ORC-, which equates to twenty pounds of available <br /> oxygen, was mixed in with the clean fill to act as an additional source of oxygen. <br /> The second event was a dewatering activity downgradient of the barriers. The <br />' dewatering consisted of pumping approximately 12 million gallons of water over <br /> a four week period from multiple off-site locations. The excavation was completed <br /> in March 1995 and the dewatering occurred during November 1995. <br /> 1 CONCLUSIONS <br /> There are three indscators of bioremediation (National Research Council, 1993). <br /> (1) Decrease in the volume of contamination. <br />' (2) The presence of microbes capable of degrading the contaminant of concern. <br /> (3) Actual indication that biodegradation occurred. <br /> 1 The results of monitoring have shown an increase in DO levels and a <br /> decrease in BTEX levels along the barriers and varying degrees downgradient of <br /> the b=ers 'There is clearly far field (Figure 3) and near field (Figure 4 and <br /> 1 Figure 5) behavior demonstrated by the areal (away from barrier) and cross- <br /> se=onal (near barrier), respectively.
