M
2.1 SITE DESCRIPTION
' This site along with Site 2, has been identified by PHS/EHD as"Site Code 1282-124 " Both sites
' are located in the central portion of the Port of Stockton complex(Figure 1) Site 2 is located about
30 feet north of Port Road G, and about 100 feet west of Port Road 13 (Figure 1) Site 3 is
approximately 750 feet west of Site 2 and is located about 50 feet north of Port Road G and about
' 300 feet west ofPort Road 14(Figure 1) Results ofthe initial subsurface investigation showed that
no PHCs remained in soils or groundwater at Site No 2 As a consequence,PHS/EHD determined
that no further investigation was required at Site 2 Following is a description of the tanks, as well
' as excavation and sampling activities at Site 3, which is the subject of this investigation
Site 3 had two 12,000-gallon tanks(Figure 2), identified on a PHS/EHD inspection report as Tank
#1 and Tank#4,both of which contained unleaded gasoline The tanks were removed on February
16, 1988 by Stockton Service Station Equipment Co , Inc (SSSS) No information is available as
to the age or condition of the tanks, or whether any associated product piping was removed The
inspection report includes a sketch which shows two "pumps" located south of the tanks,
presumably dispensers for the two tanks Approximately 180 cubic yards of soil were excavated
' with the tanks to a depth of about 11 feet below ground surface(bgs) Subsequent to the removal
of the tanks, the area over the former tanks and excavation was paved with concrete
2.2 SUMMARY OF PREVIOUS SITE CHARACTERIZATION WORK
' 2.2.1 Tank Removal
A total of four soil samples were collected by California Water Labs(CWL) during the removal of
' the tanks, one sample from beneath the north and south ends of each of the two tanks Although
the exact depths of the samples are not listed, the PHS/EHD inspection report states the samples
were collected"approximately 2 feet below the bottom of the tanks,"which would place them about
13 feet bgs No groundwater was encountered during excavation or sampling Discolored gray soil
and strong petroleum product odor were detected at the southern end ofboth tanks Minor product
rodor was detected at the north end of Tank#1,while no odor was detected at the north end of Tank
#4
' Four additional soil samples were collected by CWL on March 15, 1988 These samples were
collected from the same locations as during the tank pulls, but from a depth of 16 feet bgs A
' review ofthe PHS/EHD inspection report indicates that the inspector found"grey soil observed on
all samples with petroleum-like odor" The report also notes that no groundwater was encountered
to a depth of 16 feet bgs Soil samples collected from beneath the tanks were submitted to CWL
for analysis All soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline(TPHg)
s3a&[wwpLvqm 2 PHILIP P.
