INITIAL SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION OF
PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS
' SITE NO's. 2 and 3 (SI'T'E CODE 1282-124)
PORT OF STOCKTON
Site 2 - Near Port Roads G and 13
Site 3 - Near Port Roads G and 14
Stockton, San Joaquin County, California
1
1.0 INTRODUCTION
' This report has been prepared by BoyaJian & Ross, Inc. (B&R) at the request of Mr. Jay
Jahangin, Director of Environmental and Regulatory Affairs of the Port of Stockton (Port)
' The report presents activities and findings of soil and groundwater sampling near former
underground storage tanks (USTs) located at two separate and distinct sites within the Port
complex (Figure 1) The sampling was conducted in general accordance with the "Work Plan
' for Initial Subsurface Investigation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons," dated June 30, 1998, and a
Work Plan Addendum dated July 15, 1998 (hereafter collectively referred to as the "Work
Plan") The Work Plan was approved by San Joaquin County Public Health Service,
Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) on July 15, 1998. A boring permit was approved
by PHS/EHD on July 28, 1998
' The Port removed one UST from Site 2 in 1987 and two UST's from Site 3 in 1988. Analyses
' of soil samples collected from beneath these tanks indicated detectable levels of petroleum
hydrocarbon compounds (PHCs) Based on these findings, a "Notice of Responsibility" was
issued to the Port by PHS/EHD on January 26, 1998 The letter accompanying the Notice
' requested a work plan for investigation of the lateral and vertical extent of contamination at the
site. The purpose of this report is to present the results of the investigation and to comply with
the requirements of the "Notice of Responsibility." The report reviews the background and
' project history at the sites, summarizes the activities and findings of the soil and groundwater
sampling, and provides recommendations on whether further site investigation or remedial
' action is needed at each site
1
1 98117MNVRPTSW3UST1N RPT
BOYAJIAN & ROSS, INC
' Environmental Scientists & Engineers
