fi
2.0 SITE BACKGROUND
The following sections present the site descriptions and summarize previous characterization '
work at the saes Copies of pertinent background documents, such as the "Notice of
Responsibility," "Application for Permit to Close," PHS/EHD "Tank Inspection Report,"
the tank removal contractor's notes, and the analytical laboratory results of samples collected
during the tank removals for both sites were included in Appendix A of the Work Plan (MR,
1998).
2.1 SITE DESCRIPTIONS ,
These two sites, although separated by a distance of about 750 feet, are collectively identified
by PHS/EHD as "Site Code 1282-124 " Both saes are located in the central portion of the '
Port of Stockton complex (Figure 1) Site 2 is located about 30 feet north of Port Road G, and
about 100 feet west of Port Road 13 (Figure 2) Site 3 is approximately 750 feet west of Site
2 and is located about 50 feet north of Port Road G and about 300 feet west of Port Road 14 '
(Figures 1 and 3). Following is a description of the tanks, as well as excavation and sampling
activities at each of the two saes. '
2.1.1 Site 2
Site 2 had a 1,000-gallon tank, which was identified as Tank #2 on the removal contractor's
notes (B&R, 1998, Appendix A) According to the PHS/EHD inspection report, the tank
contained regular gasoline. The tank was removed on August 10, 1987 by Stockton Service ,
Station Equipment Co., Inc (SSSE). No information is available as to the size of-the
_ _ W `excavation;the=age=or=condition-of=the--tank; or whether=associated-product--piping-was - —
removed. A sketch map on the inspection report notes a "gas pump" just south of the tank
According to the PHSIEHD inspection report, a soil sample was collected by SSSE in "blue
clay soil" at the south end of the tank.' No information is available as to the depth of the ,
sample or whether the soils were discolored or contained petroleum product odor. An
additional sample was collected by SSSE on September 22, 1987 from a depth of 16 feet below '
ground surface (bgs). Soils were described as "clay" during these resampling activities, and
no petroleum product odor was detected in the sample No information is available as to
whether groundwater was encountered during the excavation or resampling events '
Subsequent to the removal of the tank, a Port tenant (California Ammonia Company)
constructed an approximately 200-foot diameter refrigeration dome over the former tank '
location A thick concrete slab, serving as the foundation of the dome, currently covers the
2 98117UNVRPTStiSMUSTIM RPT
1
