Box 8025
Pleasanton, CA 94588-8625
APPROVAL OF PROPOSED GROUND WATER MONITORING PROGRAM, SPRECKELS SUGAR MANTECA
FACILITY, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
We have reviewed and hereby approve the Spreckels Manteca Facility ground
water monitoring workplan prepared by K. D. Schmidt and the modifications of
the well locations you submitted on 31 July 1992. The workplan proposes that
one background monitoring well and four shallow monitoring wells be installed
around the main waste and lime surface impoundments. The Manteca Facility
currently does not have a ground water monitoring program.
The workplan proposes to analyze the following: major cations, carbonate and
bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride, total dissolved solids, total organic carbon,
ammonia, boron, and trace metals. We request lead and a cation-anion balance
account be added to the list of parameters.
We will be updating the waste discharge requirements for the Manteca Facility.
The results of the initial round of water quality sampling will provide
information regarding future operations and containment criteria for the waste
water and spent lime waste management units.
Please inform us when the monitoring well drilling date has been set. If you
have any questions, please call James Brathovde at (916) 361-5738.
Greg K.
