9. 0 MONITOW EQUIPMENT DPERATING INSCTIONS
i
9. 1 HNU PHOTDIONIZATION DETECTOR
This instrument is intended to detect compounds with ionization po-
tentials of less than 10. 2 eV. Ionization potentials for specific
compounds are included under monitoring methods.
1 . Before attaching the probe, check the function switch on
the control panel to make sure it is in the off position.
' 2. Attach the probe by plugging in the 12-pin plug to the
inter face on the readout module.
3. Turn the six-position function switch to the battery check
position. The needle on the meter should read within or
above the green battery arc on the scale. If not , recharge
the battery. If the red indicator comes on, 'the battery
should be recharged.
4. Turn the function switch to any range setting. Loos: into
the end of the probe briefly to see if the lamp is on. If
£ it is on, it will give a purple glow. Do not stare into
the probe for any length of time as UV light can damage
your eyes. The instrument is now ready for operation.
i
5. To zero the instrument, turn the function switch to the
- standby position and rotate the zero potentiometer until
the meter reads zero. Clockwise rotation of the spar, pot
produces a downscale . deflection while counterclockwise
s rotation yields an upscale deflection. Note: No zero
gas is needed since this is an electronic zero adjustment.
adjustment. If the span adjustment setting is changed
after the zero is set , the zero should be rechecked (and
adjusted, if necessary) . Wait 15 to 20 seconds to ensure
that the zero is stable. If necessary, readjust zero.
6. Turn function switch to the 0-20 position (or to scale to
accommodate calibration gas) .
7. For calibration of the instrument from the pressurized
4 container, connect the valve (provided with the calibra-
? tion kit) to the pressurized container of calibration , and
convert the valve via Tygon tubing directly to the 8" ex-
tension to the photoionization probe. Crack the valve of
} the pressurrized container until a slight flaw is indica-
ted on the gauge. The instrument draws in the volume of
sample required for detection, and the flow in the rata-
meter indicates an excess of sample. Now adjust the span
Span pot so that the instrument is reading the exact value
of the calibration gas. (If the instrument span setting
is changed, the instrument shoud be turned back to the
standby position and the electronic zero shoudl be read-
justed, if necessary) .
8. Place probe in the atmosphere to be monitored. If the
needle moves to the upper limit of the scaly, change
change the function switch to the next position.
- 16 -
