strong product odor.
Using Borderline Symbols:
A borderline symbol should be used when a soil may fall into one of two
possible basic groups. The borderline symbol consists of a / separating the two
groups (ie., SC/CL). A borderline symbol may be used when:
• percentage of fines is estimated between 45 and 55%. One symbol should be
for a coarse-grained soil with fines and one for a fine-grained soil.
• the percentage of sand and gravel is about the same (ie., GP/SP, SC/GC,
GM/SM). It is practically impossible to have a GW/SW.
• the soil could be either well graded or poorly graded (ie., GW/GP, SW/SP)
• the soil could be either a silt or a clay (ie., CL/ML, CH/MH, SC/SM)
• a fine-grained soil has the properties that indicate that it is at the boundary of
low and high compressability (ie., CL/CH, MH/ML)
• The order of the borderline symbol should reflect similarity to surrounding or
adjacent soils.
• The group name should be the group name for the first symbol except for:
CL/CH lean to fat clay
ML/CL clayey silt
CL/ML silty clay
2
