SOIL CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTIONS
Clearwater uses a soil classification system based on ASTM D-2488 to describe
soil samples in the field. To maintain simplicity and consistency in our field
descriptions, I recommend the following guidelines for describing the soils.
Discriptive terminology should follow ASTM D-2488 criteria (attached).
Basically, the semicolon separates one descriptive item about the soil from
another ( ie., color vs. moisture content). Further description of each item
(example: grain description includes dexcription of rounding and grain size) will
be included within the phrase, using commas or parenthesis for the internal
punctuation.
For Sands & Gravels
ASTM Group Name (symbol); color (include mottling); grain size and roundness
(optional) of dominant grains; grain size and abundance of minor lithologic
constituents; normal- or reverse-grading, roots, caliche, etc; density; moisture;
product odor (none, slight, moderate, strong).
Example:
Silty SAND (SM); tan with orange and green mottling
(oxidation and reduction staining); well rounded, medium to
coarse sand; trace medium gravel; trace fine roots with caliche;
medium dense; moist; no product odor.
For Silts & Clays:
ASTM Group Name (Symbol); color (including mottling); plasticity; grain size
and abundance of minor lithologic constituents; lamination, roots, caliche, etc;
cohesiveness; moisture; product odor.
Example:
SILT with sand (ML); brown, slight greenish mottling; low
plasticity; trace to little clay; trace mica; trace fine- to medium-
grained, well-rounded sand; slight lamination; very stiff; moist;
1
