File No. 20-3978-01.W 12 KLEINFELDER
January 14, 1997
Drilling of Borings and Soil Sample Collection
A total of 45 exploratory soil borings will be drilled in the vicinity of the existing/former above
ground storage tanks (refer to Plates 2 through 9). A hand auger will be used to collect soil
samples in the vicinity of the hydrochloric acid tank. Concrete cutting will be required to
obtain samples in the vicinity of the hydrochloric acid tank, the sulfuric acid tank, the liquid
caustic tank, and the muriatic acid tank.
The exploratory borings will be advanced using a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 6-inch
diameter hollow stem augers. Soil samples will be collected beginning at a depth of 5 feet and
ten feet for logging purposes and potential chemical analysis. The borings will be drilled,
logged, and sampled according to the protocol described in Attachment B. The soil samples
collected will be field screened using an organic vapor detector as described in Attachment B,
Section B-2.2. The borings will be advanced to a maximum depth of 10 feet or until
groundwater is encountered. Based upon previous investigations at the Spreckels property,
groundwater is anticipated to be at a depth of 20 to 27 feet below grade. Therefore,
groundwater samples are currently not anticipated to be obtained.
The soil borings will be closed in accordance with the protocol described in Attachment B.
Soil cuttings generated while drilling will be placed on and covered by visqueen and stored on
site pending chemical analysis. Water generated during steam cleaning of auger and/or
equipment will be left on site in labeled 55-gallon drums. Analysis and disposal of drill cutting
and steam cleaning water is not included in this proposal
Hand Ammer Soil Sampling
A clean hand auger will be used to advance each soil boring to the desired sampling depth. Soil
samples will be collected at depths of 0 to 6 inches, two feet and five feet below grade. Soil
samples are obtained by driving a 2-inch diameter by 6-inch long brass tube into the soil using
a slide hammer. The brass tube is then removed from the boring and sealed with Teflon
sheeting and plastic end caps. The sample is then labeled, and placed in an iced cooler pending
transportation to the analytical laboratory under chain of custody protocols.
The hand auger borings will be logged, and sampled according to the protocol described in
Attachment B. The soil samples collected will be field screened using an organic vapor
detector as described in Attachment B, Section B-2.2. The hand auger borings will be
backfilled with the cuttings generated during sampling.
1 aboratory Analysis
Each of the soil and water samples selected for quantitative analysis will be submitted under
chain-of-custody control to Sequoia Analytical of Sacramento, California, or Columbia
Analytical Services (Columbia) of Kelso, Washington.
20-3978-01.W121207PE024 Page 3 of 01997, Kleinfelder, Inc.
