STOCKTON GALVANIZING WORKS Page No: 2
RI/FS INVESTIGATION
Preliminary investigations have found higher than normal levels
of the zinc and lead in the soil at the site. Acid contamination
of soil has also been identified at the site. It was concluded
in the preliminary studies that: 1 ) contamination is contained
on the site and that it is doubtful that the contamination can
migrate offsite, and 2 ) the contamination presents little or no
direct threat to human health.
DHS has ordered that a complete characterization of the site be
performed. Acme Galvanizing, owner of the site, has retained
Hydrotech Consultants , Inc. , a firm specializing in groundwater
and hazardous waste investigations , to perform the required site
characterization and remedial action . Within the next several
months, Hydrotech will conduct a soil and groundwater investiga-
tion under the direction of DHS. This investigation will ini-
tially involve drilling soil boreholes and installation of
groundwater monitoring wells onsite.
The results of the investigation will be presented and discussed
in a Remedial Investigation (RI ) Report. The purpose of an RI is
to determine the nature and extent of contamination. The RI
leads to a Feasibility Study (FS) that evaluates and selects the
remedies necessary to elimate or mitigate any health or environ-
mental threats from the contamination . Upon approval of the
RI/FS , a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) describing the cleanup alter-
natives considered and the recommended cleanup plan will be sub-
mitted to DHS for approval. The RAP will be made available for
public comment before a cleanup technique is selected.
FOR MORE INFORMATION
DHS encourages your interest and input and will continue to pro-
vide you information regarding this investigation. The workplan
and other documents for this project can be viewed at the infor-
mation repository.
