Mr. Dennis Abrahamson 2 5 March 1992
Simpson Paper Company
Condition 2: Simpson must incorporate the sludge into soil within
24 hours, either by ripping or tilling, so that no standing liquid from
wet sludge is allowed to stand for more than a 24 hour period.
Incorporation of the dewatered sludge within 24 hours is necessary to
prevent the elevated sulfide levels in the sludge from forming hydrogen
sulfide and causing odors to emanate from the percolation fields.
Proper incorporation is important to ensure that the aqueous sulfides
are converted to sulfates in the soil matrix.
Condition 3: Simpson shall notify the Regional Board in writing
within 7 days if any volatile organics are detected in excess of
detection limits. The notification should include the volume, solids
contents, and location of the dewatered sludge contaminated with
volatile organics.
If you have any questions, please contact me at (916) 361-5737.
dwvu-
ROBERT A.
