Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
Section 3: Field Activities
3.1 Field Preparation
Field preparation activities were initiated following discussions with DTSC and receipt of DTSC
approval of the RI Work Plan, Addendum and Response to Comments.
The initial phase of soil boring and trench locations were marked between 18 November 2005
and 1 December 2005 and the additional borings in OU-5 were marked on 5 January 2006.
Each location was cleared by Subdynamic Locating Services of San Jose, California.
Underground Service Alert (USA) was contacted prior to initiating the subsurface activities and
the USA tickets were renewed as appropriate as the work progressed. A representative from
Kinder Morgan Pipeline Company and Sprint Long Distance visited the Railyard on
7 December 2005 for a site walk and to mark their respective underground fuel and fiber optic
lines. In addition, a Kinder Morgan Pipeline Company representative was onsite during the test
pit excavation in the northern part of OU-5.
Two drilling permits were obtained from San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
(included in Appendix A).
The drilling was conducted by Vironex Environmental Field Services (Vironex) of San Leandro,
California (C57 License No. 705927) under contract to Union Pacific. Trenching was conducted
by Turn-Key Construction (Contractors License No. 726624) also under contract to Union
Pacific.
3.2 Soil Borings
The soil boring locations are shown on Figure 4, soil samples and analytical parameters are
summarized on Table 1, and groundwater samples and analytical parameters are summarized
on Table 2. The soil boring logs are included in Appendix A.
Drilling and sampling were performed using a GeoprobeTmhydraulic push/drive sampling
(direct-push) system, under the direction of Kennedy/Jenks personnel. A California Professional
Geologist was onsite during all of the drilling and sampling activities. For direct-push borings, a
2-inch diameter steel sampling rod was advanced in 4-foot sections, and continuous core soil
samples were recovered with acetate liners in which the soil sample was collected. At each
4-foot depth increment, the inner liner was removed from the rods and the soil was lithologically
logged and at specific desired intervals a portion was retained for analysis. The borings were
lithologically logged using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) ASTM D-2488-93
Isystem, in accordance with the RI Work Plan.
Soil core samples were field screened for VOCs using a PID and inspected for obvious soil
staining and odor. Soil samples were retained at the depth intervals identified in the RI Work
Plan and Addendum (modified if necessary due to sample recovery) and where PID readings
were elevated.
Soil borings were backfilled with neat cement grout on completion.
DRAFT Phase I Remedial Investigation Report Page 16
Former Tracy Railyard, Tracy, California
g:lis-groupladminljob10510565777.18 uprr109-reportslri rptltext.doc
