containers. All Bases are stored in a secondary container isolated in the base cabinet under the fume hood
separated from the acids. Under no circumstance,Acids should not be stored with Bases in the same cabinet.
3. Emergencies, Spill Procedures, and Exposures/Unintended Contact
Use absorbent materials to contain and absorb small liquid spills. All such absorbent material shall be placed in
the proper container and contact Risk Management for disposal. If there is a large spill, contact Public Safety 6-
3911 or(209) 946-3911 and Risk Management 2-3011 or(209) 932-3011, evacuate the room and close the door.
If there is unintended exposure and contact to a chemical on the skin, remove and bag any contaminated clothing
and utilize the eyewash or emergency shower to rinse contaminated skin for 15 minutes. For immediate or
emergency medical attention, transport by ambulance to the Emergency Department at St. Joseph's Hospital
located at 1800 N. California St. Stockton, CA. 95204. If feasible, provide the SDS for the chemical to the
paramedics.
Additional Instructions: •In case of skin contact Go to the nearest emergency shower if contaminated. Yell
for assistance and rinse for 15 minutes, removing all articles of clothing to ensure contaminate is completely
removed.Follow up at Acute Care/Employee Health as appropriate. In case of eye contact Go to the nearest
emergency eyewash.Yell for assistance and rinse for 15 minutes.
4. Waste (Procedures, Storage, and Disposal):
Hazardous Waste must be properly labeled and may be stored in a designated Satellite Accumulation area for up
to 9 months. One container per waste stream is permitted at a time. When the container becomes full or reaches
its 9 month accumulation limit, request a waste disposal pickup by emailing Risk Management
riskmana eg mentkpacific.edu.
Additional Instructions: If neutralization is required prior to storage of hazardous waste follow appropriate
neutralization procedures.Neutralization means how to treat concentrated waste solutions, the dilution
procedure and the procedure of placing into waste containers.Acids and Bases must be neutralized before
discarding. Hazard-free salt solutions from acid-base neutralization may be disposed of down the drain.
Common examples include the waste of hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid neutralized by sodium hydroxide.
Hazardous salt solutions, e.g. heavy metal salt solutions such as Ni, Cr,Pb, etc.,MUST be collected in the
aqueous waste container in the laboratory.
5. Details of Process
• Obtain proper containers for the waste
• Label the containers with Hazardous Waste labels provided by Risk Management
• Date the label when material is placed in the container/accumulation start date
• On the label fill out the specific content of the material inside the container
• Fill out the Physical state i.e., solid, liquid, or gas
• Fill out the Hazardous properties on the label Corrosive,Ignitable,Reactive,Flammable, or Toxic
• Neutralize waste if necessary by following neutralization procedures
• Always keep the container capped/closed except when adding more waste
• Place the waste in the designated accumulation storage area within secondary containment
When the container reaches capacity or 9 months of accumulation time, contact Risk Management for a
pickup @ riskmana egpacific.edu
Any waste in the laboratory that has been identified as acidic(pH<7)or basic (pH>7)must be neutralized
to pH 7.
The solution shall be neutralized in a wide-neck container(e.g. beaker)that is not filled more than 50%of its
total volume.
During neutralization, add only small quantities of acidibase (as appropriate)to the solution to be neutralized.
Stir the solution continuously(can be manually with glass rod or mechanically with a magnetic stirring plate
or slow shaker).
