c. Equipment Hazards and Risk:
Due to the risk of container leakage, always place the containers in secondary containment and inspect the
waste containers weekly to ensure they are in good condition.
2. Hazard Control
a. Chemical Selection and Purchasing:
Chemical usage and purchasing shall be planned such that:
• The safest chemical to accomplish the job shall be chosen
• Open bottles and those closest to expiration shall be chosen over opening new bottles
• The surplus inventory will be checked before making any purchases
• Purchases shall be limited to the amount needed that can be used within one year.
Additional Instructions: NA
b. Engineering Controls:
When hazards cannot be eliminated or reduced through substitution, determine if additional engineering controls
can be used to reduce risks(fume hoods, flammable cabinets, limited access, etc.).
Additional Instructions: All concentrated acids and bases are used in fume hoods. The shield on the hood
will also offer additional splash protection.
c. Administrative and Work Practice Controls:
When hazards cannot be effectively controlled through engineering, determine if additional administrative and
work practice controls can be used to reduce risks(procedures, chemical segregation, etc.).
Additional Instructions: Before experiments, carefully vet the amount of chemicals needed. Only limited
amounts of concentrated acids and bases should be acquired from the Stockroom to decrease the amount of
acid/base waste in the lab.
d. Personal Protective Equipment PPE : Other PPE Required:
❑ Chemical splash goggles ❑ Blast shield
E E E E ❑ Chemical-impervious gloves ❑ Fire resistant gloves
Long Pants Lab Coat Gloves Safety
Glasses ❑ Fire resistant lab coat
(S:
Other(please describe
El L1® ® Use Nitrile gloves, lab coat/apron, safety glasses, or goggles when
®
No Open Face Shield Respirator handling hazardous waste.
Toed Shoes
e. Storage and Transportation:
When storing chemicals, utilize the proper equipment for the hazard of the chemical. i.e., flammable cabinet,
explosion proof refrigerators, corrosive cabinets, acid cabinets, etc. Moving hazardous waste or chemicals
between rooms or buildings with quantities greater than 500 mL shall be carried in a chemical-resistant tote that
offers secondary containment and impact protection.
Additional Instructions: Store hazardous waste in the dedicated Satellite Accumulation area within
secondary containment. In 9 months or when the container becomes full, contact Risk Management @
riskmanagement@pacific.edu. All Acids are stored in the acid cabinet under the fume hood in secondary
