Ms.Nyein Aung,DTSC April 9,2020
Response to Request forAdditional Information Regarding the Small Firearms Training Facility Page 3
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Site 300
EPA ID No. CA2890090002
asphalt, are any fines (smaller, dusty type material) also collected and if so,how are
the fines managed?
Response:
Fine metal waste is not collected when shell casings are collected from the paved
areas. The equipment used to pick up shell casings does not pick up fine material.
7. Does LLNL 300 have a process in place to collect fines (smaller, dusty type
material) otherwise generated from the firing of ammunition(e.g., is the area
around the sand-packed berm routinely maintained where fines would tend to
accumulate?
Response:
The LLNL Security Organization maintains the SFTF berm with hand tools such as
a rake, shovel and broom. Soil and sand from the berm is returned to the berm and
not disposed as solid waste.
The Security Organization will request guidance from RHWM and the ES&H
Team when the impact berm will be cleaned of bullet heads and fragments. The
cleanup technology will require physical methods, such as screening to remove
larger particles, and other methods to remove fine particles.
8. Where does LLNL 300 send its casings and other scrap metal for recycling? Where
does LLNL 300 send its duds and defective ammunition? Please provide copies of
manifests or other shipping documents for the materials or wastes.
Response:
1. Scrap Metal Management
LLNL Site 300 transports shell casings to be recycled, equipment, office furniture
and other assets to the Livermore Site, Donations Utilizations and Sales (DUS)
yard at the main LLNL site in Livermore. Equipment, furniture and assets are
repurposed onsite or sold for offsite use.
Brass shell casings are accumulated at SFTF in a container. The LLNL
Transportation organization is called when the container is full. Shell casings,
other mixed scrap metal, equipment and assets are loaded on a LLNL truck and
transported to the Livermore Site, DUS yard.
The scrap metal (including shell casings) from Site 300 and mixed scrap metal
from the Livermore Site are accumulated in a mixed metal roll-off bin in the DUS
yard. After the bin is full, the mixed metal is transported to Delta Scrap metal
facility for resource recovery. A weight scale certificate is issued to the driver at
ESH-EFA-WP-20-20043 VD/ST.jms
