Box 808, L-871
Livermore California 94551
RE: SUMMARY OF OBSERVATIONS AND REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL
INFORMATION
Dear Ms. Dibley:
On February 19-20, 2020, the California Environmental Protection Agency, Department
of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) conducted a Compliance Evaluation Inspection of
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Site 300 (LLNL 300) located at 15999 West
Corral Hollow Road, Tracy, California. During the inspection we observed
Non-Permitted Areas Building 805 Room 130, Waste Accumulation Area adjacent to
B883, Building 801, and Area 899 Shooting Range. DTSC is issuing this Summary of
Observations (SOO) letter for the inspection of the Non-Permitted Areas.
Request for Additional Information:
The shooting range has asphalt pavement and a sand-packed berm on a hillside behind
the targets. The casings and duds from fired ammunition are collected from the asphalt
pavement. During the inspection, I observed divots created in the berm from bullets
hitting the berm during target practice. Mr. Michael Vargas, LLNL 300 Range Manager,
stated that divots in the berm are repaired by being repacked with the sand that slumps
downslope. Ms. Shari Brigdon, LLNL 300 Environmental Analyst, stated that about ten
years ago the berm was cleaned and repacked.
&1 Printed on Recycled Paper
